More than 800 fans with genuine tickets were unable to get into the ground to see the match. At least 11 arrests were made. Two were injured and taken to hospital, including a steward who’s arm was broken by Celtic supporters.
POLICE have launched an inquiry after Celtic fans were crushed last night as they tried to gain entry into Ewood Park for their team’s clash with Blackburn Rovers.
One fan was taken to hospital vomiting blood while paramedics tended to people on the scene.
Ambulance crews in rapid response vehicles were put on stand-by as the fans, some of whom had forged tickets, fought to get inside the ground, delaying the kick-off by 15 minutes.
The police helicopter hovered overhead urging fans to get back and stop pushing as the turnstiles at the Darwen End of Ewood Park was closed.
Hundreds of fans with both legitimate and forged tickets were left stranded outside.
People who had fainted were dragged out of the crowd by friends.
Police had earlier warned the visiting supporters to arrive at the ground early after extra security was put in place to stop fans getting on with fake tickets.
Hundreds of forged tickets were in circulation, and many managed to get past police cordons into the Darwen End.
Celtic fans said fellow supporters were rushing at the turnstiles in a desperate bid to get in.
Match commander, Superintendent David Mallaby, said: “The police and stewards at the club worked very hard to try and get everybody with legitimate tickets in the ground.
“The ground safety officer, with the support of the police, took the decision to close the turnstiles because the ground was full.” Three ambulances were at Ewood Park as part of the normal match-day routine.But bosses were forced to put reinforcements on stand-by as the crush began to develop.Damian Jolly, control manager at Lancashire Ambulance, said: “I am proud of how our staff reacted .”
CELTIC triumphed in the Battle of Britain last night but chaos erupted as hundreds of fans tried to get in using fake briefs.
One Hoops fan told how 24 of 52 fans on his bus bought fakes.
He said: “I’ve never known anything like it. Lots of lads came without briefs as they were really scarce.
“One guy used a digital camera and colour photocopier to make the tickets.
“I saw him shift 50 in five minutes for pounds 5 each.
“Everyone was in on it. They knew they were forgeries, but thought they were better than nothing.”
Brazen forgers were openly selling fake tickets for pounds £5 just before the match.
One fan, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire, told how 24 out of 52 fans on his bus knowingly bought the fakes.
The fan said he watched several others being ejected.
He said: “They all had a ticket for the same seat, so they were never really going to get to see the match.
“Some had been drinking on buses on the way down and weren’t too happy at being knocked back.”
The kick-off had to be delayed for 15 minutes because of the chaos.

“Police at the turnstile admitted my ticket was genuine, but said they wouldn’t let me in.”They told me I was one among hundreds in the same situation. I was told to take it up with Blackburn tomorrow.
Police said if everyone was allowed in there would be a riot.”

We don’t know why this happened but we will be holding a debriefing with Blackburn Football Club to try to find out.”
Police were on the look-out for forged tickets for the Darwin stand where the Celtic fans were seated and all the fake tickets referred to the stand’s lower tier.
The fraudulent briefs were green in colour, sticky in texture and featured holograms of “poor quality.”

Jet carrying Celtic fans lands after midair ‘riot’
A passenger jet carrying Celtic football fans was diverted today when the pilot sent out a mayday call after a major disturbance on board.
Aviation sources said the crew described the scene on the Boeing 737 as a “riot” and at one point the RAF was alerted and scrambled two helicopters.
The jet with 148 passengers on board and six crew was diverted to Cardiff while on route from Santiago in northern Spain to Glasgow.
Police rushed to Cardiff International Airport as the jet, owned by Gatwick-based holiday airline Astraeus, touched down.
A South Wales Police spokesman said officers had been sent to the airport following reports of public disorder.
A spokesman for the RAF confirmed that two helicopters from the base at Kinloss in Scotland were scrambled shortly after 3pm.
He said: “Our aircraft were scrambled in response to a mayday call from a 737 aircraft.
“It was diverted to Cardiff and is now believed to have landed safely.”
He added that the two helicopters were later stood down.
The Celtic fans were returning home after seeing their team play Celta Vigo in the third round of the UEFA Cup.
A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We received a report that there was public disorder aboard a plane.
“It landed at Cardiff International Airport. We believe it was diverted and did not intend to land at Cardiff Airport.”
He added: “The incident is at a relatively early stage. We have sent officers to the scene.”
The crew is understood to have reported the disturbance at 3pm and had elected to divert to Cardiff.
Vincent Rey, sales and marketing manager for Cardiff International Airport, said the captain requested permission to land at Cardiff because of a situation on board which involved a flight attendant and “unruly passengers”.
The plane landed in Cardiff at about 3.17pm.
He said: “The police have boarded the aircraft and are taking statements from the attendant involved and the passengers involved. The passengers and police are on board.”
Three ambulances and a rapid response unit were sent to the airport, a Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.
SIX Celtic soccer fans arrested after an alleged riot on a passenger jet were back in Glasgow yesterday as police and the airline denied claims they had overreacted.
Fans, some of whom may face charges, rubbished allegations there had been a “serious disturbance” aboard the 737, forcing the pilot to issue a mayday call and divert to Cardiff airport.
Instead, passengers spoke of the “terrifying” moment they thought the plane was going to crash when it nose-dived as they returned from a Uefa Cup match against Spanish club Celta Vigo.
But South Wales police warned there could be more arrests among the other 140 fans, who were bussed back to Scotland. “Nothing has come to my attention to scale down this incident, indeed the opposite is true,” said Superintendent Colin Jones at Barry police station in South Wales.
“We continue to treat this incident as serious and we will be making further inquiries in the Glasgow area as well as reinterviewing the cabin crew.”
Mr Jones said a stewardess on the Glasgow-bound Astreus charter flight, which had 148 passengers aboard, was treated for bruising to an arm by paramedics at the airport when the plane landed at about 3.30pm on Friday. The six men, who were arrested on public order offences, have to return to south Wales next March to report back.
At that stage, the cabin crew contacted the pilot, making it clear they felt matters were threatening the safety of the aircraft and the pilot decided to divert.
Mr Macauley said alcohol was consumed by some of the passengers on board, although it was forbidden.
Police and airline staff discovered numerous empty alcoholic drinks containers at the rear of the aircraft.
He added that the captain, who has 25 years’ flying experience, and his crew were “extremely shaken” by the experience.
